I bet you never thought good habit were this easy to create and implement

I regret the day I promised you to help you get rid of your bad habits.

I actually started writing but something stopped me every time I had written just a few paragraphs :-(

And I kept changing what I had written over and over again.

It was like I was being pushed away from my goal by an invisible force.

So I thought to myself "why am I having such a hard time writing about getting rid of bad habits"?

I know I have adequate theoretical knowledge.

And I've also used these techniques and approaches to get rid of bad habits both in others and myself so I know they work.

But something stopped me anyway.

Then I had a light bulb moment.

It's far more important to create or establish good habits than to get rid of the bad ones.

Let me repeat that

It's far more important to create or establish good habits than to get rid of the bad ones.

I'm not talking about the destructive and unhealthy bad habits that are in need of professional help - those should be dealt with of course.

But I'm talking about how much more efficient it is to yourself and your business to establish more and more positive and helpful habits instead of trying to get rid of old habits.

Now if habits - good or bad - are hard to break or change does this then imply that good habits are hard to implement?

I would say that it's directly the opposite.

Habits are easy to implement!

Think about your own habits. How many of those did you have a hard time creating?

I guess that most of your habits just happened or snug up on you without any hard work on your part - am I right?

It seems that we acquire habits almost by accident - both the good and the bad ones.

Now, research shows that it takes 21 days to make something a habit.

I don't know about you, but I would be willing to keep focus for just 21 days to create a better life for myself.

And an even better thing about good habits is that the decision to implement and integrate a good habit only takes a few seconds.

Let me just say that again.

The decision only takes a few seconds.

Take exercise for example - or lack thereof.

I'm overweight by about 15 kilos and when I entered into a 13K race last month I failed miserably. I was able to run just 1 kilometer and had to walk the remaining 12.

During those last 12 kilometers I decided that I would get in shape again.

My big problem is my neck and back. They are suffering from years and years in front of computermonitors.

So I went out and bought a set of dumbbells, a jumping rope, an exercise bike and a sit-up bench.

We are clearing out one of our rooms and tomorrow the "Flensborg Home Fitness Center" :-) will open.

So what has all this to do with habits?

Well, as I'm writing you this letter I'm installing a new habit of getting up every morning and work out for half an hour.

Have you ever tried something like this but failed miserably at it?

Now, if I were to say "I'll try to make a habit to get up in the morning to exercise" do you think that would work?

Of course not, but how about this:

"I am deciding that I am now someone who gets up every morning to exercise"

or

"I am confirming my decision that I am someone who exercises every morning"

or

"It's true that I now automatically get up every morning to exercise"

How do the last three sentences differ from the first?

First of all, the "try" is gone - you don't get anything done by just trying - you get things done by DOING.

Secondly, they're in the present tense. "am" and "now" make it something that is happening right now - it makes it a habit the moment you say it. It's not just something that starts tomorrow - or that you will get around to eventually.

Thirdly, it's internalized. It is something that I *am* in contrast to something that I *have* or *can*.

Making the decision to start a new habit is easy so why not go ahead and start one right now?

I'm sure that you can think of at least a few habits that you can implement right away.

Habits that will benefit you physically, mentally, financially or spiritually.

But maybe you should start with the habit of "Looking daily for good habits to implement that will improve the quality of your life".
